Originally, the walls were painted white to hide the natural color and unfinished look of the limestone, but in the early 1900s, the paint was allowed to weather away and it's remained this way ever since. I think it's uniquely beautiful.
You can't tell from the photo, but as I took this photo, loud music blared from a bar (?) on the corner and an arena event at the state fair was going full tilt less than a mile away...but nothwithstanding the noise, I felt peace. Though the world may be just outside the door, there is peace in His holy house.
